Conference Realignment Update

A lot seems to be happening as we speak. The Big 12 is taking action, even while Missouri is still at a crossroads. Here's a look at the big rumors and actual stories today...

BIG NEWS: The Big 12 has reportedly invited TCU to begin play in 2012-2013 year.
-UPDATE: CBS is reporting that TCU has accepted the invitation, and will not be heading to the slowly decaying Big East.

Statement from TCU Chancellor, Victor Boschini Jr. from the Dallas Morning News

"These discussions with the Big 12 have huge implications for TCU...It will allow us to return to old rivalries, something our fans and others have been advocating for many years. As always, we must consider what’s best for TCU and our student-athletes in this ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics. We look forward to continuing these discussions with the Big 12."
TCU is all but in the Big 12 it seems

ALSO, according to CBS Sports, Missouri doesn't have the votes to get into the SEC at this time. Some schools are holding out for a better option or a more geographically-friendly option to the SEC East.

The Big East has now lost Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and TCU...and UConn, Rutgers, Louisville, Cincinnati, and West Virginia are all looking to get out. John Marinatto is looking like a genius right now.

Things are moving a bit today, so we will try to continue to update you as much as possible.

Big East Preview, Week 6

The Big East is coming off a dreadful week, where we saw two teams fall to non-AQ's, and just a lot of poor football. Conference realignment talk continues to overshadow the play, which may be a good thing, considering the play had been mostly marginal. As we get more into conference play, we'll see what teams truly belong at the top, and what teams are already thinking about next year. To the picks!

Last Week: 2-4
Overall: 26-10

Bye Week: South Florida, Cincinnati

Syracuse at Tulane: It's a battle in the Bayou of two sputtering teams. Syracuse comes in after a dreadful overtime loss to Rutgers. Once again, too many mistakes buried the Orange in what really should have been a win. Meanwhile, Tulane only has one win over an FBS opponent, and got killed by Duke. Yes, Duke. Both teams offensive stats are nearly identical. The Green Wave will rush the ball with more effectiveness. Syracuse will show more in the pass game. The Orange do have an edge in defense, especially with a few faces coming back from injury. Look for a close game early on, but if Cuse can hold on to the ball(and I know that's asking a lot) they should pull away. Look for the Orange defense to push the momentum into Cuse's favor in the second half, and help the Orange to a semi-comfortable victory.

Prediction: 34-24 Syracuse

Connecticut at (16) West Virginia: The Mountaineers open Big East play with a balanced attack...finally. It took five games to find it, but the rushing attack has opened up. The Huskies have struggled out of the gates, and were embarrassed last week by Western Michigan. UConn will have to cause havoc to disrupt Geno Smith, who is clicking right now. The Mountaineer defense looked better last week, and will play aggressively against an inexperienced quarterback. WVU should win confidently. Full preview tomorrow.

Prediction: 38-20 West Virginia

Pittsburgh at Rutgers: Both teams are coming off conference wins. Pittsburgh turned on the switch last week, and pummeled South Florida. Rutgers played terribly, yet still beat Syracuse in overtime. Two teams going in the right direction, but Pittsburgh should have the upper hand. The offense is in better shape, and the defensive unit is growing in confidence. Todd Graham finally has his kids buying into the new system, so we may see a different Pittsburgh team from now on. However, Tino Sunseri will have to stay more consistently. He has yet to have a solid performance, and the same can be said for Rutgers' Chas Dodd. The Knights' starting quarterback is coming off an ugly performance last week, will have to be relied upon this week. Pitt will undoubtedly stack the box to make Dodd work. It's just not a good matchup for Rutgers. Dodd can't win them a game right now, and won't do it this week. Look for another steady dose of Ray Graham, and the Panthers controlling for the majority.

Prediction: 24-13 Pittsburgh

Game of the Week: Louisville at North Carolina: Yes, kind of a weak "Game of the Week", but it's a pretty sorry week of games. The Cardinals just don't have anything offensively. Whether it's Teddy Bridgewater or Will Stein, it seems the bigger problem may be scheme. The offense has been stagnant for just too long. There is no excuse to lose a low scoring game to Marshall. Louisville isn't even averaging 20 points a game. Meanwhile, UNC shook off the distractions and are off to a nice start in the post-Butch Davis Era. Both defensive units have played well, so expect a bit of a defensive affair. The Tarheels have been a bit mistake-prone, which may may keep the Cardinals in the game early. However, if Bryn Renner can hold on to the football, UNC should win the time of possession battle. Winning TOP in an ugly offensive matchup like this will be key. Louisville will keep it close, especially if they can get a quick hitter or two early-on. A close game than most expect, but Louisville just doesn't have the offensive horses to keep them in late.

Prediction: 24-17 North Carolina

Today’s SEC Rumor Roundup…

From various Twitter sources….

UPDATE - Another leatherhelmetblog post.

These are so well written, that you can almost believe them. Don't give in.

UPDATE - CFB News Daily Lousville getting BigXII invite. Mizzou and WVU to the SEC. The Big East is dead.

Apparently, some dude, without a source, says there will be an announcement at 5 pm that WVU is leaving the Big East…

Another dude, without a source, says that they are negotiating with a 16th team as well…

Yet another dude claims that LSU’s plane left Louisiana this morning and flew to Morgantown. That one actually has a link…

And finally, a dude said he ran into Bill Stewart last night at the 80’s room of Bent Willey’s, and he in fact confirmed that WVU was headed to the SEC.

The sheer madness of it all. Leave your rumors in the comments…

And so you can join in and ruin your afternoon with overblown predictions and prognostications…follow along here.

Big East Power Rankings, Week 5

1. West Virginia (4-1, 0-0 in conference): Dominant performance over Bowling Green. Also found a balanced attack. Next Step...Hosting Connecticut in conference opener.

2. Cincinnati (4-1, 0-0): Have rebounded nicely from earlier loss to Tennessee. Rolling into the conference schedule. Next Step...Bye Week

3. Pittsburgh (3-2, 1-0): The Panthers seem to finally be putting it together. A solid win over ranked South Florida puts Pitt back up with the big boys. Next Step...On the road at Rutgers.

4. South Florida (4-1, 0-1): Choked once again in Big East play. And, choked once again on a Thursday night. Next Step...Bye Week to get back on track.

5. Rutgers (3-1, 1-0): It was an awful game against Syracuse, but a win is a win. Plus, the defense played respectably. Next Step...Hosting Pittsburgh.

6. Syracuse (3-2, 0-1): Mistakes continue to kill this team. The Orange have to wake up before it's too late. Next Step...Looking for four good quarters of football at Tulane.

7. Louisville (2-2, 0-0): Early candidate for the Big East Bipolar Award. Simply inexcusable to come off a bye week and lose to Marshall. Next Step...Tough roady at UNC

8. Connecticut (2-3, 0-0): A slow start to the year continues for the Huskies, following a loss to Western Michigan. Paul Pasqualoni is already feeling the heat. Next Step...Road game in Morgantown.

Conference Realignment Drama Continues...and Probably for awhile

So much for a quick solution. Yes, the Missouri Board of Curators gave permission for the school to look outside of the Big 12, but Dennis Dodd writes that an answer may not be coming soon. Missouri's options seem to be the Big 12, the SEC, and maybe even the Big 10...again. Though, credit the Big 10 for basically staying out of this round of conference expansion...at least out of the public eye.

S0, what does this mean for West Virginia? Patience. It's hard to imagine that WVU will be able to come to any sort of decision before Missouri makes a decision. Most people tend to think Mizzou is the chosen pick for the SEC's 14th spot. And, if they do stay put, there may not be a spot for WVU in the Big 12.

Or, it could also mean totally nothing. For all we know Oliver Luck and company are committed to staying in the piece of garbage conference simply known as the Big East. Hell, they may not have a choice. It wouldn't be hard to believe that WVU just isn't that sought after.

Bottomline is no one outside of the inside knows much at all. At this point, the only thing that truly matters is winning some damn football games. However, conference realignment is like a really good car crash...just so hard to look away.

WVU Fans Frothing at the Mouth…

Earlier today, Danks set up a link to a twitter search for “WVU SEC”. Its been a noisy day in that department…so I went to the ol’ tweeter to see what was doing, and mistakenly typed WVU SEC as my status.

Oops. Deleted three seconds later. In that three seconds, one follower ping’d “WHAT DO YOU KNOW” and I got two text messages on my phone saying similar things.

For what its worth…here’s something to check out..Leatherhelmetblog

Pretty interesting read, but…this is the internets people. Take everything with a grain of salt.
